Whether you’re serving English-style fish and chips, crab cakes or simple fish sticks, tartar sauce is the perfect condiment. But what happens if you have no store-bought tartar sauce on hand. There’s a simple solution, whip up some homemade tartar sauce.
Using a few basic ingredients, that you most likely have on hand, you can put this condiment together in no time. Its made with just five ingredients: mayonnaise, relish, lemon juice, onion salt and pepper
What kinds of relish work in this recipe?
Relish can mean different things depending on the context and the culture. The relish in this recipe is sweet, green relish made from cucumbers. It’s the hotdog and hamburger condiment that most North Americans simply refer to as relish.
You’ll find variations, mostly in English speaking nations. In the UK, they sell sweet relish, made from diced pickles. In Australia and New Zealand, there is something similar called sweet pickle relish. However, this type of relish is not so easy to find elsewhere in the world. I realized this when my friend, Hervé was visiting from France.
He had never experienced hotdog relish until his visit to Canada. I served my homemade green tomato relish at a patio barbecue that I invited him to. Hervé ended up loving the stuff and thought a few jars would make ideal souvenirs.
Relish & pickle options
For a great relish substitute, simply chop up ½ cup of sweet cucumber pickles. Or use dill pickles, chop them up finely and add ½ tsp of sugar. As a nice variation, I often use my own homemade green tomato relish. If you have some fresh dill on hand, then you could chop up about a teaspoon worth and stir that into the sauce, if you like.
